FAA signs $875M contract to develop AI-enabled air traffic control system.
FAA has awarded Air Space Intelligence a $875M, 12 year contract to install its SMART AI technology into the US ATM system. It will start in Washington DC.
The US FAA (Federal Aviation Authority) has signed a $875M, 12 year deal with Air Space Intelligence to deploy their SMART AI software into the US ATM (Air Traffic Management) system. The software will detect potential conflicts between flights by analysing flight plans, weather conditions and traffic demand. It will initially be deployed in Washington DC.
This is a great example of how AI can be used in the real world to solve problems. There is a serious lack of air traffic controllers in the US and this should help ease the burden. But I find it funny that the US government is willing to spend $875m and 12 years developing AI in an environment where mistakes are unacceptable…
