Anthropic Cuts Fable 5 Limits in Max and Pro Plans Starting July 20

Starting July 20, 2026, Anthropic is cutting Claude Fable 5 limits in Max and Team Premium plans in half: users will receive just 50% of already-reduced quotas — roughly one-third of the original allotment. Pro and Team Standard subscribers effectively lose access to Fable 5: they receive a one-time $100 credit, after which access to the model shifts to pay-as-you-go API pricing.

Anthropic originally planned to remove Fable 5 from all subscription tiers entirely, but reversed course. Two factors drove the change: competition from OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol, which delivers comparable performance at a third of the price, and pricing pressure from low-cost Chinese models — DeepSeek and Kimi.

The pricing war between AI labs is reshaping the subscription market: the most powerful models are migrating out of flat-rate plans and into pay-per-use. Standard ChatGPT already includes GPT-5.6 Sol at no extra charge — the bar for what comes bundled by default has shifted, and Anthropic is playing catch-up.
