Google Cuts Free Gemini Tier Down to Its Weakest Model
Starting in October 2026, Google is leaving free Gemini users with only the weak Flash-Lite model, dropping Pro and Flash.
Starting in October 2026, Google will limit free access to Gemini to Flash-Lite, the lowest tier. Pro and Flash will be removed from free access. Even if you pay $4.99 a month, you still will not get access to Pro. Only Flash-Lite and Flash will be available. Access to Pro starts at $19.99 a month.
In my experience, nobody gives away a truly good model for free. I have two paid Claude subscriptions. I use Opus 5 every day, and when things get hard, I switch to Fable 5.1. For building an AI-based product, you can use the free tier of Gemini just to check out the interface, but that is about it.
