Google has opened early access to an MCP server for the smart home: agents like Claude or ChatGPT can now control thermostats and locks, view camera summaries, and track activity around the house using natural language. The first phase is limited to Google Home Premium Advanced subscribers at $20/month in the US.
MCP is turning into a real standard — not just for developer tooling anymore, but for the physical world too. Setup requires a Google Cloud project, so the barrier to entry is still higher than it should be. But the idea of "ask an agent to turn off the lights and check if the garage is closed" is becoming real infrastructure, not just a demo.
