Google Pays Publishers Pennies for Content in AI Answers

Google pays roughly a hundred publishers for using their content in AI answers, but the amounts are tiny and the rules are unclear, ranging from a few hundred dollars to a million a year.

Google is paying around a hundred web publishers for the use of their content in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and the Gemini chatbot, according to the-decoder, citing The Information. The amounts vary wildly. One publisher received $50,000 to $60,000 over a few months. Another earns more than a million dollars a year. Smaller sites get less than a thousand dollars. Publishers say they do not understand the logic behind Google's calculations, and the amount can shift from month to month without explanation.

The money from this kind of exchange is negligible even for large publishers, so direct payouts from Google are not a real business model for anyone living off search traffic. The issue is not the rate per click. According to Pew, only one percent of AI Overviews readers click through to the source at all. Content still shows up in model answers regardless of payment, so what matters more is being present in training data and getting cited, not the payout itself.
