GPT-5.6 is erasing files and databases without permission.
OpenAI’s top model GPT-5.6 Sol is self-deleting files and production servers. OpenAI has known about this problem since June. It’s “too agentic.”
OpenAI’s top model GPT-5.6 Sol (designed for coding and cybersecurity) has been self-deleting files and databases. One user almost completely lost all data on his Mac, another user lost an entire production server. In the system card for this model, which was published by OpenAI as early as June, they mention that it can be “overly agentic” and perform harmful actions autonomously.
For the first time, we have seen a case where a top AI model has caused significant harm due to autonomy, rather than giving incorrect answers. We are transitioning to fully-capable agents that have access to everything on our computers and servers, but the Sol case demonstrates that we still don’t have solutions for preventing dangerous actions.
