Free Image to 3D Model Generator for Game Characters

A free local tool turns a photo or a short sentence into a rigged, animated 3D game character, ready to drop into Unity, Godot, Unreal, or Blender, with no upload required.

Making a finished 3D character for a game usually calls for either a hired artist or several weeks with Blender and its animation tools, and both paths cost time or money that a person who builds a game alone and gets code from an agent almost never has to spare. Today's find solves exactly this problem, and it runs entirely on your own computer, with no account and no queue for credits.

The program is called AssetFurnace, and in its own description the authors call it the most complete open source image to 3D pipeline, released in October 2026. From one sentence or one photograph it builds a textured model, cleans it up for games, fits a skeleton, and picks a matching move on its own, and all of this happens without uploading a single file to any cloud.

Starting from one photo or a short text description, the program returns a finished character with a texture, a skeleton, and one of twenty one ready moves, among them running, jumping, and dancing, and it hands the result back as a GLB file, which Godot, Unity, Unreal, Blender, and three.js all accept. There is also a sheet mode for a picture that holds several objects at once, and from it the program cuts out separate game ready props, each with a few levels of detail.

How to get your first model

The install takes one line in a terminal, and after it finishes the program opens its own studio in your browser on your own machine. Inside the studio it is enough to type a sentence or drop a picture, press Create, and wait for the result, then press Rig and pick one of the moves, after which the finished file can be downloaded and dropped straight into your own game engine.

Install the studio on your own machine
curl -fsSL https://assetfurnace.com/install.sh | bash
A line written for an agent that installs things on its own
curl -fsSL https://assetfurnace.com/install.sh | bash -s -- --yes --dir ~/lab

The second line above is built with an agent in mind. If a person pastes it into a chat with their own coding agent and asks it to run the line, the agent installs the program without asking further questions, which is exactly what the authors meant when they wrote a line in the documentation for scripts and agents.

Inside the studio a reader can pick one of several engines for the actual step of building the 3D shape, among them TRELLIS.2 from Microsoft and the Hunyuan3D models from Tencent, and the program keeps its own record of the license behind every part of a finished model. The program's own code carries an Apache 2.0 license, so a person may take it, change it, and sell things built on it, while the Hunyuan3D weights from Tencent carry a license that does not cover use in the European Union, the United Kingdom, or South Korea, which is worth checking before a finished model goes in front of clients from those places.

All of this runs only on real hardware, either a Mac with an Apple chip and at least 32 gigabytes of memory, or a Linux machine with an NVIDIA or an AMD graphics card, and the authors state plainly that they tested the program on cards with 16 and with 24 gigabytes of memory. A thin laptop with no dedicated graphics card will not carry this program, and that is worth knowing before a long install rather than after it.

✓What you get

A free and local way to turn a photo or a sentence into a finished, animated character or prop for a game, with the license behind every part recorded right inside the file. In his thanks the author named Claude and Codex as his own partners through the build, which fits a reader who also builds projects together with an agent.
