Meta rolled back its Muse Image tool after just a few days. It allowed users to create images of other people based on their @usernames on Instagram, without asking for their consent. “We missed the mark,” says Meta. Meta’s Muse Image tool, which created synthetic images of people using only their @username on Instagram, was taken down after just a few days. Users didn’t need consent or even notice when their image was being used. The tool was enabled by default and had to be manually disabled in the settings.
“We missed the mark” says Meta. Also, European regulations would have prevented this. This is a larger issue about how AI tools are being developed without proper consideration for getting user consent. And lessons are being learned the hard way.
