Microsoft Exits the Power Race, Betting on Cheap Specialist AI Models
Microsoft is pivoting to narrow specialist models instead of chasing the most powerful AI: MAI-Cyber-1-Flash beats Anthropic Mythos by 12 percentage points at half the cost, while MAI-Image-2.5-Flash cuts GPU costs by 84%.
Microsoft has stopped racing for the most powerful general-purpose AI model and is betting on affordable specialists instead. The new MAI-Cyber-1-Flash beat Anthropic Mythos by 12 percentage points on cybersecurity benchmarks — at half the cost. A separate model, MAI-Image-2.5-Flash, cuts GPU costs by 84% compared to GPT-Image-2.
This signals a broader industry pivot: instead of one expensive "superstar," an ensemble of narrow models each laser-focused on its own task. Anthropic and Sakana are moving in the same direction, which means AI systems will get cheaper and more capable even without increases in compute.
