Anthropic Manager Drops Coding Interviews

Anthropic engineering manager Felix Rieseberg has dropped coding interviews from hiring. He says Claude solves these tasks better than candidates do.

Felix Rieseberg runs engineering at Anthropic, which makes the Claude models. He heads the teams building Claude.ai, Cowork, and Claude Code Desktop (all of them powered by Claude), and he decided to stop doing coding interviews altogether. Why? Because asking a candidate about assembly, an old programming language, would be strange today. In the same way, there is no point asking someone to write a bit of React code. Why? Because Claude will do it better. Now, when he wants to evaluate a candidate, he just looks at the resume and the portfolio. He tries to find small projects that show good taste and good instincts.

He admits this is not perfect. He does not yet have a clear system for evaluating portfolios. Sometimes he might miss someone who does not have an impressive side project but does have good taste. Still, the main point holds: if the model does better than you in the interview, the interview itself has lost its purpose.
