MiniMax, a Chinese start-up, announced that it will release an open-source version of its 2.7 trillion-parameter language model, M3 Pro, in Q3 2026. It is six times bigger than their previous largest model, M3 (428 billion parameters). It will also be the biggest open-source Chinese language model ever. Other major players include DeepSeek, Zhipu, and Moonshot AI.
These kinds of models were once the exclusive domain of big tech companies with deep pockets. This move comes as the Chinese government is considering limiting the exportation of AI technologies, and M3 Pro might be one of the final open-source releases.
