OpenAI Shuts Down Atlas Browser Eight Months In
OpenAI has shut down the Atlas browser less than eight months after launch. Its features will move into a Chrome extension, bringing ChatGPT to Google's browser sidebar.
OpenAI has shut down the Atlas browser — eight months after its October 2025 launch. At launch it was billed as a direct challenge to Chrome; now its features are moving into a Chrome extension: ChatGPT will open in Google's browser sidebar. At the same time, OpenAI is releasing a desktop Computer Use feature — ChatGPT will be able to click, type, and move files in the background.
The closure of Atlas signals that OpenAI is abandoning the idea of controlling the browser and is instead betting on embedding itself in someone else's infrastructure. It underscores that Google still holds a strategic advantage: data on how people browse the web.
