ChatGPT is being used by hundreds of contractors
A 404 Media investigation found that hundreds of contractors are being paid to rate conversations generated by ChatGPT on a 1–7 scale, where the prompts are anonymous but could potentially be personal data.
404 Media did some digging and discovered that there are hundreds of people getting paid to evaluate chats created by ChatGPT. These people will be rating these chats on a scale from 1–7. They are hired via Crossing Hurdles and paid via Mercor. If you live in the US, you can make more than $50/hour doing it! It’s anonymous, so you don’t know if your prompt contains PII or not.
This is a heads up to anyone else using a cloud service. By default, the “Improve the model” feature in ChatGPT is turned on. Humans have been involved in this process since 2023 (this was an FAQ that I wasn’t aware of until after writing this post).
I’m using Claude Code since they’re open about what they do with your data, but it’s a cautionary tale for anyone using a cloud service.
