OpenAI unveils its $230 Micro Keypad for ChatGPT
OpenAI’s first ever hardware product, the Micro mini keypad, allows you to program six buttons for use with ChatGPT. It costs $230 and was developed with help from keyboard manufacturer Work Louder.
OpenAI launched its first ever hardware product in July 2026, in collaboration with keyboard manufacturer Work Louder. The Micro mini keypad costs $230 and can be connected via Bluetooth or USB.
What Micro Can Do
It includes six agent keys which can each be programmed to run a different instance of ChatGPT or a Codex task (OpenAI’s code generation tool). There are also six app control keys, and a voice input key. The status of each key is indicated by color (blue for ‘thinking’, green for ‘finished’, red for ‘error’).
Early Reviews
Users found it difficult to learn how to use, especially since managing several projects at once using physical keys can be tricky. Some veteran developers expressed doubts about the usefulness of the product, arguing that you could get better value for money elsewhere.
Why It Matters
Although this product is rather niche, it represents OpenAI’s first venture into physical hardware. This suggests that AI firms are beginning to move away from purely digital interfaces and towards integrating their technology into the real world.
