New OpenAI data center is powered by up to $105B from Nvidia
OpenAI just locked up the biggest data center lease deal ever, at 8 gigawatts of IT capacity in Ohio for 20 years. Nvidia will invest up to $105B in the deal and supply all of the chips.
In what is believed to be the largest data center lease agreement in history, OpenAI has inked a 20-year contract for an 8-gigawatt data center in Ohio. Nvidia will invest up to $105 billion, and the facility will exclusively use its chips. The new data center will be constructed on the PORTS-Pike site, which previously housed a uranium enrichment plant, and is owned by SoftBank’s subsidiary, SB Energy.
The first phase of the project, consisting of 800 megawatts, will be completed in 2028. A shortage of “LPS” — land, power, and space — is emerging as the new bottleneck in the AI arms race, according to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. The company’s tech rivals have committed a combined $3 trillion in off-balance sheet AI infrastructure costs.
