Artificial Intelligence on Human Skin, a new ingredient discovery every six weeks!
Outer Biosciences preserves human skin for up to 30 days outside the body and uses it to train an AI algorithm. The company goes from finding two new active pharmaceutical ingredients every 18 months to one every six weeks.
Outer Biosciences, a startup company, is able to preserve human skin for up to 30 days outside the body. This is ten times longer than traditional techniques. The company uses this tissue to train an AI algorithm to find new cosmetic and pharmaceutical ingredients. Without AI, the company was able to find two new active ingredients every 18 months. With AI, they can find one every six weeks.
There are around 130 active skin ingredients currently approved in the US, and the list hasn’t changed much over the years. AI paired with living tissue rather than test tube cells can accelerate the pace of discovery by many orders of magnitude, and not just in cosmetics.
