1/3 of all post-ChatGPT web pages created using artificial intelligence, says Pew Research

35% of new public webpages are generated using AI, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of half a million web pages.

Pew Research Center examined half a million webpages indexed in the public internet archive, Common Crawl. Of those pages added since ChatGPT was released (November 2022), 35% display obvious traces of AI-generated content. This amounts to 10% of .com pages, less than 1% of educational and government pages. The most common telltale signs include excessive use of em dashes, Oxford commas, and “not X but Y” phrases.

35% of the public internet’s new content was authored by AI. Search engines and language models are increasingly using AI-generated data as training material, which in turn affects the quality and authenticity of online information.
