Proton CTO: An Engineer's Job Is Now to Manage the Model
Proton CTO Bart Butler wrote a memo arguing that an engineer's job is now to manage the model, not to write code by hand.
Proton CTO Bart Butler wrote a three-page internal memo on how AI is changing software development. The tech outlet 404 Media published its contents. "Your job has fundamentally changed," it reads. "It is no longer to write code, and the LLM is not here to help you write code better and faster. Your job is to help the LLM write code better and faster." Engineers have been sharing the memo online. It has drawn public support from Peter Steinberger (an OpenAI employee who built the OpenClaw coding agent), David Heinemeier Hansson (creator of the Ruby on Rails web framework), and Lauren Tan (principal engineer at SpaceX).
This debate points to a real shift happening across the industry. More and more engineers are directing AI models and agents instead of writing lines of code themselves. I agree with Lauren Tan that there is no point longing for the old days; the job has moved from writing code to managing models. Still, regular code review is not going away. An AI agent can generate code that looks like it works. In reality it may not work correctly, and someone has to catch that.
