Reddit Shuts Down RSS and Public API Over AI Scraping

Reddit is turning off its RSS feeds on November 13 and will shut down the public API in March 2027. The reason, according to the company, is straightforward: RSS has long since turned into a plain venue for mass scraping and automated abuse. Meanwhile, revenue from data licensing outside of advertising grew 24% year over year, reaching $43 million in the second quarter.

For agents that currently pull Reddit data through RSS or the free API, this marks the end of free access. After spring 2027, that data will only be available through paid deals with the platform itself. In effect, Reddit is showing where open data now makes money in the AI era. Not advertising, but licensing for model training. I would factor this into any pipeline that pulls data from social platforms. Free APIs and RSS feeds are closing one after another, and it is worth lining up a paid or partner alternative ahead of time.
