Restate Raises $20M for "Durable" Infrastructure for AI Agents
Berlin startup Restate has raised $20 million for an engine that keeps AI agents from losing their state when they fail midway through a long process.
Berlin startup Restate has closed a $20 million Series A, with money from Singular, Redpoint Ventures, and Capital One Ventures. Three Apache Flink veterans founded the company in 2022: Stephan Ewen, Igal Shilman, and Till Rohrmann. They are building an engine for multi-step processes that automatically restores state after a network failure or a server crash. Customers include vibe-coding platform Replit and several Fortune 500 companies, with contracts in the six and seven figures.
A long agentic process with a dozen steps can easily fail somewhere in the middle. Without a separate recovery layer, that failure means either a full restart or someone digging through logs by hand to figure out what already happened. Restate's competitor Temporal has already raised $550 million at a $12.55 billion valuation. That suggests the demand for this kind of insurance on agentic workflows is real, not hype. I have no direct experience with Restate itself, but I see the underlying problem, not losing an agent's state after a failure, in my own work with Claude Code. I think it is a genuine problem, not marketing noise.
