SpaceX buys Cursor for $60 billion
SpaceX has officially purchased Cursor, a popular AI code editor, for $60 billion. They’ll be releasing a new code IDE (Grok 4.5), and Cursor will receive access to SpaceX’s massive private GPU infrastructure.
SpaceX has finalized their purchase of Cursor, a popular AI code editor. The transaction was worth $60 billion, which began discussions back in April 2026 when the two companies first announced a collaboration. After SpaceX merged with xAI to form the new company SpaceXAI, Cursor was folded into their new conglomerate.
First Joint Models: Grok 4.5 and Grok 4.6
As a result, they’ve released a new code IDE (Grok 4.5) developed in collaboration between SpaceXAI and Cursor, specifically tailored towards code generation and agency. Soon after, Grok 4.6 was also released, fine-tuned on real-world use cases like general programming, web dev, and CAD. These models are accessible via Cursor.
GPU Infrastructure as the Crown Jewel
Cursor will benefit from having access to the world’s largest private GPU infrastructure, with SpaceX’s compute power rivalling that of top cloud providers. With this new infrastructure, Cursor can train models more quickly and make them accessible to users at a cheaper price than other companies who must pay to access external compute resources.
Prior to the acquisition, Cursor was one of the fastest-growing AI developer tools in the market, with competition coming from GitHub Copilot and Claude Code. Now, the market of AI coding assistants will have to compete with companies who have very different access to GPU infrastructure.
