SpaceX Cuts Grok Bot Limits Over Unsustainable Costs
SpaceX tightened Grok Bot's weekly usage limits. Musk said the service's costs had grown higher than the revenue it brought in.
Some users of Grok Bot, the AI assistant built by SpaceX, Elon Musk's space company, reported that their weekend quota over Halloween jumped from 50% to 100% with no obvious reason. On November 1, Elon Musk tweeted that this was intentional. It was not a bug, he said. Grok Bot was actually running at a loss for SpaceX. In its latest earnings report last month, SpaceX said AI now makes up 52% of its revenue, and that its AI division, renamed "Super Intelligence," brought in $431 million in profit.
According to Elon Musk, Grok Bot grew faster than anything he had seen before. That rapid growth made running Grok Bot at that scale unprofitable, so SpaceX had to limit its use instead of paying the extra costs. It is rare for an AI agent platform to admit publicly that it hit a point where the cost of handling requests exceeded the revenue those requests brought in. This kept going until the compute bill forced a cap.
