Spotify Bans AI Performers From Algorithmic and Editorial Recommendations

Starting August 11, Spotify began labeling AI performer profiles with an "AI Persona" badge — visible on artist pages, in search, and in playlists. From mid-September 2026, Spotify will by default stop including such music in algorithmic and editorial recommendations: only AI artists that a user has explicitly followed will make it into rotation.

The company is using a dual approach: from August 11, artists can self-declare their AI nature, while Spotify simultaneously reviews profiles where "the name and image represent a photorealistic AI persona." The badge will be visible across all pages of the platform.

The world's largest streaming service has for the first time drawn a systemic line between real musicians and AI personas — not banning them, but cutting them out of organic traffic. If this model takes hold, similar distinctions will inevitably reach video, podcasts, and books: platforms are becoming the arbiters of content authenticity.
