Uber Rolls Out ChatGPT Work to All 30,000 Employees

Uber, the ride-hailing company, and OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, announced the rollout on October 22. ChatGPT Work, OpenAI's chat tool for companies, is now going out to all 30,000 Uber employees worldwide. This follows a months-long pilot with 1,000 employees. 80% of the pilot participants were not engineers. They worked in finance, operations, and product. They used the chatbot to analyze operational data, translate training materials into different languages, and build personal work dashboards. Uber also attached 30 of its AI engineers to regular teams. Each attachment lasted 2 weeks and targeted a specific automation project.

The pilot's tasks — data summaries, translations, dashboards — fit well with a browser-based chat tool. None of that requires an agent that writes and runs code on its own. One other detail stands out more: the 30 AI engineers placed on regular teams for 2-week rotations. Working on real automation projects inside a team looks closer to actual agentic work than asking a chatbot for a summary.
