Unreal Agent: Async Tool Calls, 40% Cheaper Than Codex
Unreal Agent runs tool calls asynchronously, so the agent does not pause and wait for a response. On Terminal-Bench 4.0 and DeepSWE 1.1, this delivers up to 40% token savings versus Codex with no loss in quality.
Unreal Agent is an open-source agent framework that does not make the model wait for tool responses. File and API calls run in the background, and the agent does not pause. On Terminal-Bench 4.0 and DeepSWE 1.1 benchmarks, this produces up to 40% token savings compared to Codex and up to 20% compared to Pi. Quality does not drop.
Berkeley showed last week that different frameworks produce the same quality but cost can differ by a factor of two. Unreal Agent addresses exactly that. Async execution removes the tokens that were burned on idle waiting. I would try my own runs on their runner first. No need to rewrite any prompts.
