AI from DeepMind can predict cyclones a day earlier than the best physical models.

Google DeepMind’s WeatherNext forecasts tropical cyclones up to 24 hours earlier than existing techniques. In 2025, it helped the US National Hurricane Center alert Jamaica about Hurricane Melissa’s rapid intensification.

WeatherNext generates 1,000 potential tracks of a cyclone in just one minute, which used to require hours of computational resources from a supercomputer. All their research is open sourced, including their code, weights, and methodology, so that other countries can replicate US-level forecasting accuracy with ease. This is the first instance where AI has outperformed physics-based models in practical scenarios (not just theoretically).
