ChatGPT Search Traffic Reaches 20% of Google's

OpenAI gave a number for the first time: ChatGPT's search traffic has grown to 20% of Google's, several times the share Bing managed to build in a decade.

ChatGPT's share of the search market, according to OpenAI

At a press conference on Monday, Adam Fry, who heads the consumer ChatGPT product team at OpenAI, said that ChatGPT handles 20% of the query volume that Google gets. That figure covers cases where ChatGPT searches the web for information. It does not include cases where ChatGPT just explains a word or phrase without going online.

For context, Microsoft's Bing search engine managed to grab only about 3% of the market after more than ten years of trying. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella cited that number during the antitrust trial against Google. In other words, ChatGPT has beaten Bing's result several times over. If you want people to visit your website, SEO (optimizing your site for high rankings on Google) is no longer your only option. Instead, a chatbot can decide on its own whether to show a link to your site or just give an answer directly.
