Zoox, an Amazon company, has started operations at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas. It is the first robotaxi service that operates directly from the baggage carousels. Zoox started its operation last month on August 10 and has already surpassed Uber and Lyft in this respect. The latter services let their clients out at the airport exit, which is a 5–10 minutes walk from the baggage carousel. Besides Zoox, Tesla, Uber and Waymo also have licenses for Clark County and can collectively operate up to 8,000 robotaxis in the coming year.

The airport presents a serious challenge for self-driving cars. There are predictable traffic patterns, clear demand, and a transparent benchmark in regular taxi services. If a robotaxi can beat human drivers in terms of convenience, it will set a new standard and raise the entry barrier for other companies.
