Zuckerberg Admits Meta's AI Agents Are Moving Slower Than Expected
Mark Zuckerberg told employees that replacing people with AI agents is behind schedule — despite laying off 8,000 people and moving 7,000 into "Agent Transformation" units. Meta continues to pour $145 billion into AI infrastructure in 2026.
At an internal all-hands on Thursday, Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged that AI agents at Meta had not "accelerated the way leadership had expected." It's a direct admission of a gap between expectations and reality — a rare moment where a CEO of Meta's stature says so in front of employees. Zuckerberg added that the headcount reductions had not been as "clean" as they should have been.
Context: $145 Billion and 15,000 Displaced Employees
In early 2026, Meta laid off roughly 8,000 people (10% of its workforce) and moved another 7,000 into new AI divisions, including an "Agent Transformation" group. The bet was that AI agents would take over the functions of the laid-off employees. That hasn't happened yet: the expected benefits of the new structure, Zuckerberg said, have not yet "materialized." He did, however, express cautious optimism about the next 3–6 months.
At the same time, Meta continues to invest heavily in infrastructure: the company is putting $145 billion into AI compute in 2026. That creates a telling picture — the bet is placed, the money is spent, the people are gone, but the agents themselves haven't kept pace. Zuckerberg's admission matters for the entire industry: it shows that the shift to agentic automation will take longer than even the largest players had planned for.
