One endpoint instead of ten AI subscriptions: the OmniRoute gateway
OmniRoute is a free open-source gateway you run on your own computer: instead of setting up each AI tool separately, you get one local endpoint.
It's a program you install on your computer: it connects to many AI providers and gives you one address instead of a dozen separate setups.
When it helps
Useful when you keep hitting one AI service's limits or want to cut wasted tokens from logs and command output; skip it if one tool without limits is already enough.
Pros
- Switches to another provider automatically when one hits its limit
- Compresses wasted tokens (logs, repeated output) — works with any model
- Free and open source, keys stay on your machine, not in a cloud
- No new subscription needed — works with the model you already use
Cons
- Setup isn't one command: you connect each provider separately
- npm install asks permission to run its own install script
How to set it up — step by step
- 1Open your AI agent (Claude Code, Codex) in your project folder.
- 2Ask the agent to install OmniRoute from github.com/diegosouzapw/OmniRoute following the README.
- 3Allow npm to run the install script — that's an expected setup step.
- 4Connect one free provider and your model's key.
- 5Send the agent the text from the block below.
- 6Check the localhost:20128 dashboard to confirm the request routed through the gateway.
Text for your agent
Copy this and send it to your agent — Claude Code, Codex, any of them:
Install OmniRoute from https://github.com/cheaper-inference/OmniRoute — follow the README (the npm install will ask to allow its install script, that's expected), connect one free provider and a model key I'll give you, point my usual coding agent at the gateway, and show me a request going through the dashboard at localhost:20128.
Runs on a regular laptop — no GPU needed, just Node.js. For the free models you'll need your own accounts with some providers (signup is free for most).
