Spec Kit — A Development Toolkit for AI Code Agents.
Create a structured spec then have any AI coding agent implement it. 134k stars in one year.
Spec Kit is an open source toolkit from GitHub for spec-driven development using any AI coding agent. Rather than communicating features in an informal way, you can define your desired outcome and why in a structured spec. Then the CLI (specify-cli) will walk you through the process using slash commands (/speckit-specify, /speckit-plan, /speckit-tasks, /speckit-implement, /speckit-converge) to help you set up project principles, write a spec, create a technical plan, define tasks, implement, and finally converge on the result until it meets the spec. The following optional extensions are also available: bug fixes (assess → fix → test) or ideation (intake → research → define → shape → decide). Spec Kit is compatible with GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, and Codex. This project has achieved over 134,000 stars in its first year.
Why a vibe-coder should care
AI agents are more predictable and require less editing when provided with a good spec. Get started with the methodology after a year of developers in the community using it in practice. If you find yourself spending more time editing your AI agent than explaining the request, this is for you!
How to install
Copy this and send it to your agent — Claude Code, Codex, any of them:
Install Spec Kit from https://github.com/github/spec-kit — run pip install specify-cli, then specify init --here --integration claude in my project folder, and walk me through creating the first spec for a new feature.
Runs on a regular laptop — only Python needed.
