Nanbeige4.3-33B: a free AI model that writes and fixes code
This is a new open model from the Nanbeige team that you can download and run for free — it's meant to set the quality bar for smaller models to come, and it handles code, planning, and tool-based work better than similarly sized open models.
An AI model with about 33 billion parameters (the numbers that store what it learned) that you can download and run on your own machine for free.
When it helps
Good for experimenting with code and tool-based tasks on your own hardware, or as a backup when a paid subscription isn't an option — don't expect it to match the best paid agents.
Pros
- Free to use under the apache-2.0 license
- Huge context window — up to 512,000 tokens of text
- Can turn step-by-step reasoning on or off before answering
- Beats similar models on most professions in the JobBench test
Cons
- Needs serious hardware: a 32GB Mac or a 24GB graphics card
- Noticeably weaker than the best paid agents on real complex work
How to set it up — step by step
- 1Open your coding AI agent (Claude Code or similar) inside your project folder.
- 2Send the agent the text from the block below.
- 3Have it pick a compressed version sized for your Mac's or graphics card's memory.
- 4Ask it to run the model locally via Ollama, if a ready-made version exists.
- 5Check the model's first answer to a simple question.
Text for your agent
Copy this and send it to your agent — Claude Code, Codex, any of them:
Try to set up Nanbeige4.3-33B for me: https://huggingface.co/Nanbeige/Nanbeige4.3-33B — pick a compressed version that fits my Mac or GPU memory, run it locally through Ollama if a ready build exists, and show me the model's first answer to a simple question.
This is a large model: you will need roughly a Mac with at least 32GB of memory, or a graphics card with 24GB, to run a compressed version locally (an estimate based on model size; exact numbers depend on the quantization used).
