Amazon has received a permit to build the GW Ranch gas plant in Pecos County, Texas — 35 turbines totaling 7.65 gigawatts, with no grid connection, built exclusively to power a new AI data center. According to Cleanview, the plant is permitted to emit up to 33 million tons of CO₂ per year — more than the country's largest coal-fired power plant.
As AI power consumption explodes, Google, Meta, and Amazon are building their own gas plants, and the environmental commitments of the early 2020s are giving way. An Amazon spokesperson acknowledged: 'The world looks different than when we made The Climate Pledge' — though the company is not formally walking it back.
