7.65 GW & 33M tons of CO2 /year for AI at Amazon’s gas plant in Texas
Amazons’ GW Ranch gas plant in Texas got approved. 35 Turbines, 7.65 GW, and capable of producing up to 33 Million Tons of CO2 annually, more than the US’s biggest Coal Power Plant.
Amazon’s GW Ranch gas power plant has been approved in Pecos County, Texas. The plant includes 35 turbines and generates a combined 7.65 gigawatts of power. This off-grid facility will provide power exclusively to a new Ai datacenter owned by Amazon. They have been granted permission by Cleanview to emit up to 33 Million Tons of CO2 per year. That’s more than the largest coal fired power plant in the US.
Artificial Intelligence is on the rise, and it requires increasing amounts of energy. To keep up with demand, Amazon, Google, and Meta are building their own gas powered facilities. The climate promises made during the early 2020s are going away. Even though Amazon claims ‘The world looks different than when we made The Climate Pledge’ (but they haven’t actually withdrawn their promise).
