A US federal court has signed off on a $1.5B settlement between Anthropic and book authors (around $3,000 per book, out of 500,000 books). It was illegal for them to download books from pirate websites like Library Genesis, but it’s legal to train AIs on copyrighted content.
This decision isn’t legally binding, but it’s the biggest copyright settlement ever for an AI lab. There are other cases pending against Google, Meta, and OpenAI. Every future case will use this number as a rough guideline.
