Anthropic Is Building a Custom Silicon Design Team

Anthropic has announced hiring for a custom silicon team, aiming to co-design hardware and Claude models so they run faster and cheaper. Samsung is being considered as the manufacturer; competitors are already ahead — OpenAI has the Jalapeño chip, Google builds on TPUs, and Meta on MTIA.

A proprietary chip means independence from Nvidia pricing and direct control over inference speed. That's exactly how Google and Meta have kept their AI costs in check while other companies overpay for rented compute.
