Dario Amodei Worries Anthropic's IPO Will Attract the Wrong People
Anthropic is preparing for an IPO at a $1.5–2 trillion valuation. Founder Dario Amodei worries that kind of money will draw people chasing profit, not the mission.
Anthropic, the company behind the Claude family of AI models, is heading toward an IPO at a valuation of $1.5 to $2 trillion. Forbes puts the net worth of co-founder and CEO Dario Amodei at $13.6 billion. He has said publicly that at valuations this high, "we might start attracting people who are interested in financial gain rather than our mission of AI safety." Reports also say Anthropic now asks job candidates in interviews what they would do if the company decided to halt AI development over safety concerns, a move that would send the stock to zero.
Anthropic's existing models, Opus and Fable, which people use every day through Claude Code, are exactly what this mission is supposed to protect. So if the company starts hiring people who only care about the money, a drop in model quality is probably one of the first things they would start cutting corners on. And judging by the fact that they ask this question about the stock crashing to zero, it seems they already know it.
