Goldman Sachs Pulls Claude Code From Traders and Bankers

Goldman Sachs has restricted access to Claude Code and GitHub Copilot to engineers only. The bank points to productivity and risk management as the reasons.

Wall Street bank Goldman Sachs has banned most of its bankers and traders from using two AI coding assistants, according to Bloomberg. The move comes after the bank's CTO, Marco Argenti, publicly championed "vibe coding" back in July. Vibe coding means using AI to quickly throw together prototypes, which engineers then turn into full working systems. A Goldman spokesperson said the decision was about "productivity and risk management." He added that access to the AI tools would stay with those who can get the most long-term value out of them, meaning engineers.

This isn't a step back from AI coding. It's more a sign of how poorly built processes can choke off innovation. The real question isn't whether an AI agent writes part of the code. It's whether there are checks and balances in place, things like code review and accountability for what actually ships. Just cutting off access to an AI tool isn't a solution. Goldman took the easiest path: leave access to engineers only.
