Anthropic has entered a $10B, 6 year compute deal with Volta, a startup founded in early 2026. This includes 133 MW of compute in a former Bitdeer Bitcoin-mining center in Norway running on Nvidia Vera Rubin chips.
Volta was started in early 2026 by ex-Brookfield investment fund managers. Half a year later, they signed a $10B, 6 year compute contract with Anthropic. This involves 133 MW of compute at an old Bitdeer Bitcoin mining facility in Norway powered by Nvidia Vera Rubin chips. This will be delivered in two parts by March 2027. Recently, Volta raised $300M from Andreessen Horowitz, Nvidia, and Michael Dell, bringing their valuation to $2.4B.
AI compute is becoming so competitive that even large research institutions are spinning up their own compute providers. We are now in a world where there isn’t enough compute to go around for even cloud computing services, and old Bitcoin mines in Norway and startups that have been around for less than half a year are being used to train state of the art models.
