UK employment tribunals overwhelmed by AI-generated claims (64,000 case backlog)
In the last year, there was a 39% increase in UK employment claims, a hundred-fold increase in interim relief applications, and a backlog of 64,000 cases due to AI-generated documents full of fake laws.
The UK’s employment tribunals are overwhelmed with cases. There has been a 39% rise in claims between March 2025 and March 2026, a hundred-fold rise in interim relief applications and a 55% rise in the backlog (which currently stands at 64,000 cases). The reason? Employees are turning to ChatGPT and Grok rather than lawyers to draft hundreds of pages of legal documents containing made-up laws. The presidents of the employment tribunal, Barry Clarke and Susan Walker, have warned their colleagues of the scale of the disaster.
This is the first major example of unfettered access to AI leading to difficulties within a regulated professional environment. With falling costs, there will be an increase in claims and genuine claimants will have to suffer as others are funnelled into litigation by chatbots.
