Character.AI Goes Bankrupt, Disney Buys Up the Assets
Character.AI has filed for bankruptcy and is selling part of its assets to Disney for $20 million, down from a peak valuation of $2.5 billion.
Character.AI, the startup behind popular AI companion chatbots, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the US. Chapter 11 is a legal process that lets a company keep operating while a court oversees the sale of its assets to pay back creditors. The company has agreed to sell part of its assets to Disney, the media and entertainment company, for $20 million. That price is only the starting bid at the bankruptcy auction. The deal still needs court approval, and other bidders may offer more. Character Technologies, the company behind Character.AI, valued its own assets and liabilities at somewhere between $50 million and $100 million. Two years ago, Google paid $2.7 billion to license technology from the same company. At that time, its founders moved back to Google DeepMind, Google's AI research lab.
This shows how fast hype built on user numbers can turn into bankruptcy once a product fails on safety. In 2024, Google valued the same company at $2.7 billion. Now its assets are selling for $20 million. Lawsuits over harm to underage users piled up for years. In the end they brought the company down faster than any competitor could have. The lesson here: content moderation and responsibility need to be built into a product from day one, not bolted on later.
