Claude Shared Chats With Crypto Keys Discovered by a Google Search

Because of a missing noindex tag, thousands of Claude shared chats have been indexed by Google, Bing and Brave. Chat threads with crypto keys and legal questions are among the leaked messages.

Thousands of Claude chat conversations have been made available online because of a misconfigured “Share Link” functionality. The functionality allows sharing chat conversations but was missing a “noindex” tag.

What Happened

A Reddit user discovered that searching for site:claude.ai/share lists other users’ conversations. The “Share Link” functionality was added in 2023 by Anthropic but they never implemented the mechanism to prevent indexing.

The company reacted promptly to the discovery. While Google has since excluded the links from search results, Bing and Brave have taken more time to remove them. Users can now delete any published chats from their Settings > Privacy > Shared Chats.

Precedent

This is not the first time a company makes this error. OpenAI had the same problem which they eventually decided to turn off completely. It’s concerning that these companies do not seem to learn from each other’s mistakes when recreating functionalities. The “Share Link” does not imply that only your intended recipient sees it, you need to make sure that search engines cannot index the link unless you explicitly tell them not to.
