Best Programming Fonts: 63 Free Typefaces in Codeface

I've been using the same default monospace font for months without really thinking about it. Then someone dropped a link to Codeface in a Discord I'm in and I spent like an hour just clicking through the gallery. Turns out there's a whole world of programming fonts out there and most people just... never bother to explore it.

Codeface is a collection of 63 free monospaced typefaces — each with preview screenshots in both light and dark themes, so you can actually see what it looks like before touching anything. The fonts range from classics like Anonymous Pro and Courier Prime Code to more expressive picks like Fantasque Sans Mono, which has this slightly quirky hand-drawn feel to it. Everything is free, most are open source, and license files are included with each font.

The whole thing is available as a single zip archive — about 31 MB with all 63 fonts inside. If you only need one specific font, each one lives in its own subfolder in the repo with the font binaries and license file right there. No complicated setup, no package manager needed — just download and install like any other font on your system.

Download Fira Code from the chrissimpkins/codeface repo (fonts/fira-code/ directory), install it on my system, and set it as the default font in VS Code at size 14 with font ligatures enabled.

If you're building something that displays code — a portfolio with snippets, a notes app, any kind of terminal-style interface — you can embed any of these fonts directly in your project. Most come with web font formats or your agent can convert them. The previews in the README are rendered at standard code sizes so what you see in the gallery is pretty much what you'll actually get.
