Porting a 2003 strategy game to iPhone takes only hours with Claude Code
Command & Conquer was ported from PC to iPhone in 40 minutes using Claude Code and Fable 5.
Ammaar Reshi (Lead Product & Design at Google AI Studio) has ported Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Hour (a 2003 real-time strategy video game) to iOS (iPhone/iPad) using Claude Code and the Fable 5 model. The initial prototype was completed in around 40 minutes. The final product (with debugging) took approximately 2 days and used up an entire month of Claude Max quota.
It’s not an emulator, it runs native ARM64 code. It translates DirectX 8 into Apple Metal via several layers of abstraction. All three game modes (Campaign, Skirmish, Generals Challenge) are functional and include touchscreen support. There is one remaining bug where it sometimes crashes on iPad because of memory constraints. You can find the complete source code here on Github.
In the past, porting a codebase across different platforms would take several weeks of effort by seasoned programmers who were well versed in both APIs and had extensive knowledge of the underlying codebase. With this tool, one individual was able to complete the task in just a few days using an AI agent. This opens up many possibilities for niche projects such as porting, emulating, and maintaining legacy systems which were previously out of reach for most individuals due to lack of time or resources.
