50 Agents Invent Their Own Bureaucracy in Minecraft

Fifty agents running on GPT-6.1 Sol spent three hours in a closed Minecraft world with no top-down commands, and built their own hierarchy, food tracking, and work protocols.

Y Combinator Labs and Olam Labs ran 50 agents on the GPT-6.1 Sol model in a closed Minecraft world for three hours, with no commands from above. Twenty-two agents died on the very first night. The survivors exchanged almost 5,900 messages and built their own bureaucracy. They set up rationing records, a fishing shift schedule, and a strict chicken hand-off protocol, after one agent accidentally ate it. In separate competitive matches, the same GPT-6.1 Sol agents beat Claude Opus 5.5, 6-3 in Bed Wars and 6-1 in Mindustry.

The agents invented their own hierarchy and rules within a few hours, with no human involved. I see something similar in my own company: without clear roles, agents end up building extra layers of process on their own. For real-world development, this reads more as a warning than a show of strength. That is exactly why I give each agent a separate, defined role up front.
