Free Game Assets: 150+ Resources for Sprites, Sounds, and Backgrounds

More than 150 free game resources: sprites, backgrounds, sounds, icons, textures, 3D models. Collected by Hotpot.ai for Unity, Godot, and Web game development.

I’m working on a little web game in my spare time and recently found myself wasting too much time looking for assets. My agent could generate some decent sprites (e.g., rectangles for players) or gradients (e.g., for backgrounds), but they were always missing something. This isn’t because my agent is bad, it just needs a list of places to look for quality free game assets.

Hotpot.ai has compiled a great resource of over 150 free game asset links into this GitHub repo. They are broken down into categories (sprites, backgrounds, etc.) and contain only high-quality links. No extra noise!

There aren’t any descriptions of these links, you’ll need to visit them yourself. kenney.nl is hands down the best free game resource out there. Consistent styles, free tiles/characters/ui kits, etc. opengameart.org has thousands of community generated packs. itch.io/game-assets/free has tons of indie game assets, which usually have more character than mainstream resources. Under sounds you can find royalty free music from Unminus and ccMixter. Finally, under backgrounds (coolbackgrounds.io, heropatterns.com, getwaves.io) there are lots of cool images you could use for your web app landing pages, not just games.

How to use this free game assets list with your agent

  1. 1Open the GitHub page and scroll to the category you need (Sprites, Backgrounds, Sounds, Icons, etc.)
  2. 2Pick a source and copy its URL
  3. 3Paste the URL into your conversation with your agent along with what you need
  4. 4If a site has a search, describe what you're looking for so the agent can narrow it down

Note that many of the links in this repo are to freemium sites. You should be able to get by with their free options for personal projects, but some platforms offer paid packs. The repo doesn’t distinguish between free and paid, so make sure to check the license of the site you want your agent to pull from (especially for commercial use).
