When I first started developing small games with Godot, I found that the most frustrating aspect was adding effects. Sure, you could easily import sprites from an asset store, but what about actual visual effects? How do you make your fire look realistic? Or add some ripples to your water? Or make your characters dissolve when they die? I didn’t really care about writing my own shaders.

The Godot Shaders repository by GDQuest is a free library of 30+ pre-made shaders for Godot 4. The shaders include both 2D and 3D effects such as dissolve, outlines, water, stylized fires, toon shading, snow, force fields, screen blurs, and more! For each shader, there is also a demo scene which you can view to get an idea of how the shader will look in your game. GDQuest is an established Godot educational group who have been creating paid courses and free YouTube videos for years. This is one of their many community projects.

In order to use a shader, simply go to the Shaders/ directory on GitHub, locate the shader you want, download the .gdshader file and any associated textures (which should be located right next to the .gdshader file). Then drag these files into your Godot project’s FileSystem pane, select the Mesh or Sprite object, go to ShaderMaterial > Shader, and set the file location. You can also ask your agent to do this for you by sending them the file location via chat.

How to add a shader to your Godot 4 project

  1. 1Browse to the Shaders/ folder in the GitHub repo
  2. 2Pick the shader you want — water2d, dissolve, 3d_outline, toon, stylized_fire, interactive_snow, etc.
  3. 3Download the .gdshader file and any .png or .tres texture files next to it
  4. 4In your Godot project: drag all downloaded files into the FileSystem panel
  5. 5Select the node (Sprite2D, MeshInstance3D, etc.) → Inspector → Material → New ShaderMaterial → Shader → point to the .gdshader file
ℹGodot 3 users

The main branch is currently being ported to Godot 4 — some demo scenes may not be complete yet. If you're on Godot 3, download the 1.0.0 release from the Releases page. Thats the last fully working Godot 3 version.

Most of the folders under the Shaders/ directory contain only the .gdshader file and possibly some textures. That’s it! No need for package managers or dependencies; simply drag and drop the file! If you want to check out what the demo scene looks like, head over to the Demos/ directory where you will find the same scenes, which you can then open up in Godot.

✓What you get
