Hugging Face is reportedly being acquired for over $13B

Hugging Face, home to millions of open source AI models, is being acquired for $13B or more, up from its $4.5B valuation in 2023.

The website that hosts tens of millions of freely available open source AI models is apparently being acquired for over $13 billion. The company was worth $4.5 billion in 2023, and had previously rejected a $7 billion bid from Nvidia. Deal hasn’t been finalized.

Why should you care? Hugging Face acts as a sort of middleman between developers and open source AI models, hosting them until they’re ready to be downloaded and used. The company’s CEO, Clément Delangue, says there’s a “long-term responsibility to the community,” but I think these negotiations suggest that this middleman’s days are numbered. So watch out for who buys Hugging Face, as they might decide which models get shared widely.
