IMF Warns AI Stock Crash Could Threaten Financial Stability
The IMF's financial stability report warns that a crash in AI company stocks could hit the entire global financial system, because of circular financing between cloud giants and AI startups.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is a global body that monitors financial stability. It warned in an October 13 report that a crash in AI stocks could shake the whole global financial system, not just Silicon Valley. Cloud giants have put about $300 billion into weaker AI startups. They added another $650 billion in debt on top of that. Those startups booked $1.4 trillion in future revenue commitments. AI companies now make up more than 35% of the S&P 500, a major U.S. stock market index. The IMF also found thin capital levels at banks holding 22% of global assets.
A bubble in stock prices is one thing. What AI agents actually do every day is another. Whatever happens to these stocks, the models will keep writing code and doing tasks just as before. A crash would hit people who bought AI stocks as a bet on the future harder than it would hit people who already work with agents.
