Uber's Founder Raises $1.7B and Returns to Robotaxis
Travis Kalanick has raised $1.7 billion for his startup Atoms, in a round led by a16z with $100 million from Uber itself. The company has acquired Pronto and is in talks about integration with Uber.
Travis Kalanick — founder of Uber — has raised $1.7 billion for his startup Atoms. The round was led by Andreessen Horowitz, with Uber investing $100 million. The company has already acquired Pronto — an autonomous vehicle startup founded by Anthony Levandowski, the former CTO of Uber's self-driving unit. According to the Financial Times, Atoms is in talks about integrating its robotaxis into the Uber platform.
Kalanick calls robotaxis "unfinished business" — he left Uber in 2017 amid scandals, never having delivered on the company's core bet on autonomous transportation. Now he has $1.7 billion, Pronto's technology, and a potential distribution partner in Uber.
What This Changes in the Robotaxi Market
The robotaxi market is currently dominated by Waymo (14 cities, 4,000+ vehicles), Tesla Cybercab, and Amazon's Zoox. Atoms, with Uber as a potential partner, could enter the market with a ready-made demand network — without eight years of building a user base from scratch. If the integration happens, the world's largest ride network gains an autonomous fleet, and Uber answers the question it has been wrestling with for years: whose self-driving cars to fill the platform with.
Uber's participation in the round signals that the company is betting on multiple players at once: it already works with Waymo and Tesla. Atoms adds another potential source of autonomous fleet supply — with a founder who understands how Uber works from the inside better than almost anyone.
