Alibaba has announced Qwen 3.8 — a multimodal model with 2.4 trillion parameters, the first in the Qwen family to exceed 1 trillion. The model understands images, video, and documents and is optimized for coding, data analysis, and productivity tasks. Open weights are promised soon; early access is already available through Alibaba Token Plan, Qoder, and QoderWork at a 90% discount.
Alibaba calls Qwen 3.8 "second only to Fable 5" and is taking direct aim at Moonshot AI's Kimi K3, which remains unavailable as open weights. The race for trillion-parameter open models is becoming the new Chinese standard — and the pressure on proprietary Western systems keeps building.
